Excellence, an original poem by Darius Spencer

Excellence
Excellence is not given; it is earned. It is earned by putting your thoughts into action.
Excellence is not inherited; it is achieved. It is achieved by working toward the goals you have set. Excellence does not have a color or sex boundary. It simply knocks on the door of whoever is willing to listen.
Excellence is not a gold trophy, it is represented only in your mind and displayed in your work. Excellence sometimes hides; excellence sometimes wears a disguise. It is often disguised as work… Hard work.
That is how it knows if you are willing to listen. That is how it knows if you are willing to be patient. That is how it knows if you are dedicated. That is how it knows if you are committed... Committed to Excellence.
Excellence to me means that, no matter how many times I fall, I will do whatever it takes to get back up.
Excellence to me means that if I fail once, I will always go back and learn from my mistake, so that I make sure it will never happen again.
Excellence to me means that by fulfilling my dreams, not only will I hold my head up high, and in doing so, I can look down on all of the negativity and naysayers that have haunted my life and tell them that they were wrong.
But, in not doing so, in not fulfilling my dreams, not only will the negativity haunt me forever, but my choices will as well. My choice of dedication, my choice of patience and my choice of commitment… My Commitment to Excellence.
That is what excellence means to me. But now it is time to ask yourself, what does excellence mean to you?
